Water Management

The Alberta Government is committed to the wise management of Alberta's water today and in the future. Water for Life: Alberta's Strategy for Sustainability is the strategy developed by Alberta Environment which outlines key directions, specific strategies and actions to manage our water resources more effectively.

Water for Life: Alberta's Strategy for Sustainability focuses on four specific areas:

  1. Safe, secure drinking water supply
  2. Healthy aquatic ecosystems
  3. Reliable, quality water supplies for a sustainable economy
  4. Knowledge to make effective water management decisions

Individuals, communities and industry work with the government to see that water resources are used in a safe and sustainable manner. Watershed Advisory Councils, within major river watersheds, provide direction to the government on watershed management and include stakeholders throughout the drainage basins. These councils partner with Alberta Environment to provide watershed planning and reporting expertise as well as stewardship activities.
